August saw an early race during a long camping weekend with Rachel, Terri and Ed. Camping started at Lake Selmac in Jackson county. Nice park. After 2 nights there, on to Agness and the Agness RV Park where the triathlon was held.
Agness is 25 miles east of Gold Beach in the coast range. Large active park in the middle of the forest.
The triathlon was a sprint, but swim, run, bike order. Which I was happy with. It meant my legs weren't dead for the run.
The swim was in the Rogue. Started with a short up river swim to get a good angle for the rapids you had to "swim" through. It was a feet first run through the rapids then flip over and breaststroke to the take out. The current meant little effort for swimming. The half mile swim took less than 10 minutes. Did I mention a life jacket was required for the swim?
It was a longer return to transition than normal, but allowed time to get my heart rate down a bit after the swim. The run was a mile up out, down back. I felt good during the run doing about 10:00 pace. I didn't want to tire my legs too much for the bike, but knew it would be easier to finish on the bike than on a run.
The bike was a bow tie route, that started with a long gradual climb of about 2 mile before turning around for a fast descent. Then the mild up and down of the run course but longer. My legs were tired but not wiped out so I was able to finish with some hard peddling the last 2 miles. A fun race. Finish time of 1:44:43. No AG places in this one.
