Ralph's Run, formerly the ORRC Y2K. Ralph was the founder of this race in 1986, ran 8.6 in '86. Each year the longer distance would add .1 so you always started the year with a PR. Ralph developed Alzheimer's a few years ago and in May, 2021 went missing. He's yet to be found. The race was renamed in his honor and the proceeds are going to assist the family's continued search for him and in aiding in establishing a Silver Alert system in Oregon. A sad but fitting tribute to Ralph.
Before my ankle surgery, this would be my first race of the year. This year is the first time since 2014 that I've run it. I love this race. It isn't an easy half marathon (they have made the longer distance a half now) and 10k, it's a nice course run on country road outside of Forest Grove and is a good way to begin the year. Before Covid, they would have pancakes after the race.
I ran the 10k. This would be my second 6 mile run in three months. So it wasn't gonna be fast. The course hasn't change and as I said, it's a favorite. It is flat for the first 3 miles, mile 4 begins some mild roller coasters, then at the end of mile 5 and mile 6 there are steep hills. They are about 50 and 100 meters in length but a good climb. Ralph is one of the nicest people and wonderful race director, but admit, I curse him every time I head up those hills.
Knowing the challenge of the second half of the course and my current state of conditioning, this was to be an intentional training pace run with an A goal of finishing in under 1 hour and a B goal of running 6 miles in under 1 hour. B goal was accomplished when I crossed that mark at 59:34, finishing the 10k in 1:01:39.
I'm satisfied with the effort. The first mile my left butt cheek was sore/tight but it loosened up. From observing That Guy, my posture has improved. I didn't look as stiff as I have and leaning forward more as I stride. Those Tuesday torture sessions appear to be working on improving my flexibility and reducing tightness.
Not a bad beginning for 2022 and 63/48 and approaching 64/49.
