Today I ran the 5k of the Corvallis Half Marathon. 26:15, faster than my birthday run of a month ago. In some ways it felt easier, executed my race plan for one (negative splits), so I wasn't fighting the lactic acid demons. But it was still hard. I'm mentally weak to accept and fight thru the pain of a 5k (but then I've always hated 5ks for that reason), my legs are also not ready to find that extra gear. But all of that I am fine with.
I'm finally getting back to consistent, injury-free training. Slowly building my distance base, thus the main reason for the faster time. I want to continue this gradual build for the next year, then come Spring 2020 I'll be ready to add speed work to the mix. I want that base before I step on to a track for intervals.
Today was a satisfying run in that I executed well. My goal was mile one in 8:45, mile 2 in 8:30, mile 1.1 faster and hang on. My splits were 8:40, 8:30, 9:08 (8:18 pace) for an 8:28 overall average pace.
It is satisfying to be able to have a race plan, even more so to execute it. My birthday race was satisfying to see I have improved, it was frustrating in that the miles weren't marked so difficult to judge pace and having to rely on effort. I think I worked harder at that race than this one. At least I felt less in oxygen debt today.
The celebration continues.
